Description
In this talk I will briefly introduce the subject of finite temperature Quantum Chromodynamics and its connection to the structure of the early universe and the heavy ion collision experiments at RHIC (BNL) and in the future at the LHC. In these collisions a new state of matter, called the Quark-Gluon Plasma, is claimed to be formed. I will introduce some of the theoretical tools for the investigation of its properties, such as lattice QCD, ADS/CFT and Effective Field Theories, focusing on this last one. Effective Field Theories are valuable tools for dealing with problems where various sufficiently separated energy or momentum scales appear. I will show how to use this approach to study quarkonium suppression in heavy ion collisions and to compute the Polyakov loop and its correlator.
