Description
The neutron lifetime helps to test the Standard Model of particle physics
and plays an important role in primordial nucleosynthesis.
PENeLOPE, a new storage experiment for ultracold neutrons, is being
developed to measure the neutron lifetime with higher precision than it
has been determined so far.
In order to reduce losses through wall collisions a neutron reflecting
surface can be installed at the trap walls. The neutron storage properties
of two possible realizations were investigated at ILL: metal sheets and a
PET foil, coated with diamond-like carbon. The experiment and results are
presented.
