Superthermal Converter Materials for the Production of Ultra-Cold Neutrons (UCN)

Description
New UCN sources are presently developed world wide based on the principle of superthermal UCN production, using cryo-converters made of solid deuterium, superfluid helium or solid oxygen. In a series of experiments at the cold neutron beam line MEPHISTO of the FRMII we have investigated deuterium, oxygen, tetradeuteromethane and nitrogen-15 concerning their properties as UCN converter materials. In this talk these experimental results will be presented and possible implications will be discussed.
