Description
The Excellence Cluster PhD Meeting is a traditional event that aims to gather the Excellence Cluster PhD students in a two-days socializing event. The 2015 event will be organized in two days: the first day will be dedicated to meet up, to present current/past work to each other through talks, and to attend talks given by senior scientists. On the second day we plan to go hiking in the Bavarian Alps (bad weather option: German Museum with tours). The meeting intends to be informal to foster lively discussions and to create a productive atmosphere to share our results and experiences. Organizers: Ivan Vorobyev (PhD student, Excellence Cluster Universe, TU Muenchen) Christoph Niehoff (PhD student, Excellence Cluster Universe, TU Muenchen) Marco Tazzari (PhD student, Excellence Cluster Universe, European Southern Observatory) Dr. Andreas Müller (Excellence Cluster Universe, Scientific Manager)

Abstract of this senior scientist talk: No matter how you ended up in science, sooner or later you will face a situation in which you will be confronted with hard reality and the borders traced by your limits. The fire that burned so bright may loose its strength and the dreams of revolutionizing physics will probably become weaker and weaker. You may also start asking yourself about the usefulness of what you are doing and whether it really made sense to invest your best years and energies in pursuing very abstract questions. Questions that often remain unanswered. In his talk Nando will try to address these points going through his personal experience, exposing its bright and dark sides, sharing with the audience perplexities and hopes.
      Speaker: Nando Patat (ESO)

      European Southern Observatory

      Karl-Schwarzschild-Straße 2 85748 Garching
The properties of hadrons, as the mass and the width, can undergo modifications when those are produced within an environment with non-zero baryon density. Theses effects start already at normal nuclear matter densities and can be connected to fundamental properties of strong interaction as the quest of signatures of the restoration of chiral symmetry. In this talk Laura will present some selected results on this topic and show future perspectives.
