News in quarkonium production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions

We review the status of the understanding of quarkonium production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, with a special emphasis on excited states and new observables at the BNL-RHIC, the CERN-LHC and a possible fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams.
