Description
Ferroelectrics and ferromagnets are fundamental materials with an enormous diversity of applications. Mulitferroics combine ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism and in addition reveal strong magnetoelectric coupling, which allows the control of magnetization by electric and the control of polarization by magnetic fields. This lecture will provide an introduction into the basics of multiferroics, of magnetoelectric coupling, and in recent developments of perovskite-derived mulitferroics. In addition, we will discuss the observation of a new class of excitations, namely electromagnons, which can be characterized as spin waves excited by ac electric fields.
