The talk reports about the actual project status of the planned free neutron life- time experiment " PENeLOPE " focused on the engineering and hardware.

Furthermore an historical overview about the ideas, development steps and realization is given to provide information for future large scale scientific projects within E18. Resources, costs, challenges and lessons learned so far are considered.
