
Parabola slides
Where: Department for Mathematics and Data Science in Garching
Time: 15 minutes
If you have half an hour of spare time, you can take a brief walk from the venue to the TUM Department of Mathematics and Data Science. The large parabola slides are free to use for everyone, just get a carpet at the bottom and take the stairs (or elevator) to the third floor. Make sure the rubber part of the carpet faces up and enjoy the slide!
English Garden
Where: U6 stations "Münchener Freiheit" to "Odeonsplatz"
Time: 1 - 2 hours
The English Garden is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, even larger than the central park in New York. You can get of the U6 at "Münchner Freiheit" and reach the park within a few minutes of walk. In the park, you can visit the Chinese Tower and drink a beer or lemonade at the beer garden close by. The picture shows the view from the Monopterus, a small pavillion on top of a hill. Finally, you can watch the surfers at the Eisbach and leave through the Residence Garden at the U6 station "Odeonsplatz".
Old City
Where: U6 Stations "Odeonsplatz" to "Sendlinger Tor"
Time: 1 - 2 hours
The old city of Munich is located between "Odeonsplatz" and "Sendlinger Tor" (north to south) and "Isartor" and "Karlsplatz (Stachus)" (east to west). Most of the area is (nearly) car-free. There are many shops, cafés and restaurants around. It's possible to visit the iconic Marienkirche or walk up the Old Peter (Alter Peter) from which the picture was taken. You can also visit the Viktualienmarkt, a market with both exotic and German food available. If you join the Old-City-Tour, you can learn a bit about the history of Munich.
Deutsches Museum
Where: between S-Bahn stations "Isartor" and "Rosenheimer Platz"
Time: min. 2 hours
Other than the name suggests, the Deutsches Museum ("German Museum") is a museum for science and technology. To reach it, you can exit the U6 at "Marienplatz" and then walk or go by S-Bahn to "Isartor". Located on an island in the Isar river, the museum features over 20,000 square metres space for exhibitions on maths, physics, chemistry, aviation, civil engineerig and more. If the weather is bad and you have half a day to spend, this is a place for physicists to be.
