Description

The purpose of the Large Scale Structure Days is to bring together all the people in southern Germany and beyond who are interested in the LSS of the Universe with the aim of fostering fruitful exchanges and collaborations among them. The big question for this year will be the transition from stage 3 to stage 4 surveys. Where do we stand with and what did we learn from stage 3 surveys, and where are we going with and what are the challenges for stage 4 surveys?

Some topics that will be discussed include:

  • Galaxy clustering
  • Beyond 2-point statistics
  • Cluster physics
  • Gravitational lensing
  • Non-standard cosmological models
  • Numerical Simulations

This event will take place at MPE and will be a two full-days in person meeting on Oct 20+21. The schedule is now set up and you can check it out in the timetable tab on the left. The list of confirmed speakers include:

  • Jose Bernal (Cantabria)
  • Adriaan Duivenvoorden (MPA)
  • Daniel Gruen (LMU)
  • Hendrik Hildebrandt (Bochum)
  • Azadeh Moradinezhad (Annecy)
  • Barbara Sartoris (LMU)
  • Nils Schöneberg (LMU)

Connecting the CMB and Large-Scale Structure: From ACT to the Simons Observatory

I will present recent results from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, with a focus on galaxy clusters, CMB lensing, and cross-correlations with galaxy surveys. These measurements demonstrate how CMB observations are becoming increasingly relevant for studying the late-time Universe. I will then introduce the Simons Observatory and describe how its large-aperture telescope will not only deliver improved versions of the existing microwave-sky observables, but also become sensitive to a different observable: the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect. Once combined with a galaxy survey, this small-scale CMB signal has the potential to reconstruct the large-scale three-dimensional matter field with substantially lower effective noise than the galaxy survey by itself. I will conclude with a brief overview of recent kSZ results and upcoming challenges.

A Golden Age for Galaxy Clusters? From Current Surveys to the Euclid Era

Galaxy clusters are powerful cosmological probes, sensitive to both the growth of structure and the geometry of the Universe. With the advent of new optical and near-infrared surveys such as Euclid, DES, DESI, and LSST, we are entering an era in which clusters can be detected and characterised across an unprecedented redshift range and volume. These datasets, complemented by millimetre and X-ray observations from surveys like SPT and eROSITA, allow us to explore the cluster population in a truly multiwavelength framework.
With the first Euclid data release (Q1), we have now begun identifying and characterising galaxy clusters, marking an important milestone towards precise cosmological measurements. I will present these first results in the broader context of current cluster surveys, discuss the main challenges ahead and outline the next steps in exploiting Euclid’s full potential for cluster cosmology. In parallel, I will show how deep, multiwavelength studies of individual systems shed light on the nature of dark matter and the internal structure of halos.
