J. Gray: Geometry on a large scale and string phenomenology

I will discuss the current status of one approach to obtaining phenomenological particle physics from string theory: smooth Calabi-Yau compactifications of heterotic M-theory. I will begin with an introduction to this type of string theory model. I will then describe the state of the art in obtaining MSSM type particle physics models in this setting. I will finish by discussing the problems faced by this approach, in particular in terms of the subject of moduli stabilization.
