Positrons in the galaxy
Last year saw the 40th anniversary of the first report of the detection of gamma-rays from the direction of the centre of the galaxy that proved to be from the annihilation in interstellar space of low energy positrons. Although we now know much more about the environment in which the annihilation is taking place, and have some information about where it occurs, after 40 years the origin of most of the positrons is still an open question. Suggestions range from the well-known to a variety of exotic possibilities. The status of observations of the signatures of positron annihilation, the physics involved in their interpretation, and the possibilities for how the positrons may be originate, will be reviewed. The nature of their passage through the interstellar medium from birth site to annihilation turns out to be a crucial issue. Although concentration will be on positrons at eV to MeV energies, recent direct measurements of fluxes of high energy positrons (and other antimatter) will be briefly reviewed, as will prospects for the future and more speculative aspects of anti-matter in the cosmos.
