In recent years multi-wavelength observations of time-variable phenomena, both in the local and distant Universe, and their physical interpretation have become a major topic of astronomy and astrophysics. This includes stellar explosions of all kinds, as well as gamma-ray bursts and mergers of neutron stars and black holes. In this talk some highlights will be presented together with an outlook on what we might achieve in the years to come.
