Fermion production in helical gauge fields

Particle production in strong electromagnetic fields is a recurring theme in solid state physics, heavy ion collisions, early universe cosmology and formal quantum field theory. In this talk I discuss the Dirac equation in a background of parallel electric and magnetic fields. This includes the Schwinger particle production rate, the emergence of the chiral anomaly equation and the computation of the induced current of charged fermions. All of these effects may play important roles in early Universe cosmology, and I will discuss inflation and leptogenesis as two examples.
