Blazars are the most studied kind of extragalactic sources in high-energy astrophysics, as well as promising candidate counterparts of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. In this presentation I will discuss recent developments in this field, including blazars’ spectral, time-variability and cosmological properties. I will then illustrate the growing evidence for the neutrino-blazars connection, starting from the now famous object TXS0506+056 to the association of known gamma-ray emitting blazars with the (so far) largest statistical sample of IceCube high-energy neutrino tracks, resulting in an excess of 15 +/- 3.6 blazars of the most energetic type, corresponding to a (post-trial) p-value of 3.23 sigma. These results have been achieved thanks to the availability of very large multi-frequency datasets, obtained with the Open Universe platform (https://openuniverse.asi.it), an initiative of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) to provide transparent access to astronomical data to the widest possible community, from professional researchers to all people interested in space science.
