Garchinger Maier-Leibnitz-Kolloquium: Single and double beta-decays with massive sterile neutrinos

Nuclear beta and double beta-decay experiments are intensively used for exploring the space of neutrino parameters. In this talk, we will see how these experiments can throw light not only on the active neutrino sector, but also to the sterile neutrino sector. In the first part of the talk, we will revisit the potential of single beta-decay experiments to search for keV sterile neutrinos, highlighting its complementarity with neutrinoless double beta-decay searches. In the second part, we will discuss a new method to search for sterile neutrinos in the two-neutrino double beta-decay process, which could probe the hypothesis of MeV neutrino masses beyond current limits.
