...from the airport to Munich
Munich airport offers direct connections to many international destinations, including Japan, China or the US. People arriving by airplane can take the suburban train ("S-Bahn") into Munich, either going to Munich main station ("Hauptbahnhof") or the actual city center ("Marienplatz"). Tickets can be bought at the ticket machines at the train stations. A single trip costs EUR 10.40. If you plan to make more trips on that day, it is preferable to buy a day ticket called "Single-Tageskarte Gesamtnetz" for EUR 11.70, that is valid for a whole day for a theoretically infinite amount of trips.

...from the airport directly to Garching or the research campus
People connecting directly from Munich airport to Garching can either take a taxi (price approx. EUR 30-40) or take S-Bahn line S8 to Ismaning station and from there the bus 230 to Garching Hochbrück, Garching town or the Garching research campus ("Garching Forschungszentrum"). If you do not plan to go to Munich downtown that day, a "Single-Tageskarte Außenraum" day ticket for EUR 6.00 should be your choice.
...from Munich or Garching to the research campus
The subway line U6 connects Munich downtown ("Marienplatz") with the town of Garching and the research campus ("Garching Forschungszentrum") with approx. 25 minutes travel time. Make sure the destination indicated on the train and on the information panels is indeed "Garching Forschungszentrum", since not all trains go all the way through. From Munich main station you can take any S-Bahn going eastward (direction "Ostbahnhof") to get to Marienplatz and proceed to the research campus from there, taking the U6. If you are staying in Munich and travel to Garching and back each day, a day ticket, called "Single-Tageskarte München XXL" for EUR 8.10 is preferable to buying tickets for each single trip. If you are just travelling from Garching town to the research campus the "Kurzstrecke" ticket for EUR 1.30 is sufficient.

People arriving by car should take the highway A9, use exit "Garching Nord" and follow the road straight into the Research Campus.

The workshop will be held in the Auditorium of the Institute for Advanced Study, located directly opposite of the northern exit (in the direction of travel) of the subway station and marked by the red arrow on the map below. For your convenience the map also indicates the subway station (marked by the U), parking spaces (marked by the P) and places where you can get food!
