The result of a nuclear physics experiment is always only as good as all its components. This includes the target as an indispensable element. With this contribution, we want to draw attention to the importance of isotope and target production for nuclear physics research in general. We show which aspects should be given special attention in the future, which areas need special support and which resources are required for this
