Electron – Rare-Ion Scattering for electromagnetic precision data on nuclear structures

Description

In this contribution to the call for input to the NuPECC Long Range Plan 2024, we describe an initiative, which aims at equipping the unique arsenal of heavy-ion storage rings of GSI and the Modularized Start Version of the international FAIR facility at Darmstadt with a state-of-the-art electron accelerator for the studies of in-ring electron scattering reactions on stored radioactive ion beams separated by the Fragment Separators of GSI/FAIR. Kinematically complete measurements, where the electrons and the target-like recoils with their associated gamma emissions are measured with high efficiency, are facilitated due to the relativistic focussing effect (Lorentz boost) in the collider kinematics. This initiative can be considered as an attempt to adapt the previous ELISe proposal to the FAIR program to the technological and infrastructural developments during the last decade and, at the same time, to establish forward-looking infrastructure for electromagnetic precision studies on long-lived transuranium actinides.
