Public transport

By plane

Munich Airport (MUC) is the second busiest airport in Germany and offers direct connections to many national and international destinations.

From the airport to Munich

To go from the airport to Munich take the suburban train ("S-Bahn") lines S1 or S8 into Munich. Both lines pass Munich main station ("Hauptbahnhof") and the actual city center ("Marienplatz"). Tickets can be bought at the vending machines at the train stations. The single trip ("Einzelfahrkarte Zone M-5") costs 11.90 EUR. If you plan to make more than one trip on that day, it is preferable to buy a day ticket called "Single-Tageskarte Zone M-5" for 13.20 EUR, that is valid for a whole day for a theoretically infinite amount of trips.

Travel time: approx. 45 min.

From the airport to Garching or the research campus

At Munich Airport, take the suburban train ("S-Bahn") line S1 (city bound toward "Ostbahnhof"). Exit in "Neufahrn" and change to Bus 690 toward "Garching Forschungszentrum." The single trip ("Einzelfahrkarte Zone 2-5") costs 7.00 EUR. (Note: Bus 690 does not run on sundays).

Alternatively, you can take the suburban train line S8. Exit in "Ismaning" and change to Bus 230 toward "Garching Forschungszentrum." The single trip ("Einzelfahrkarte Zone 1-5") costs 8.80 EUR. (This bus runs all weekdays.)

Travel time: approx. 40 min.

By taxi, the travel time is approx. 20 to 30 min and the fare is 40 to 60 EUR.

By train

Munich Central Station ("Hauptbahnhof") is very well connected with German and European cities. Connections can be found at the webpage of German Railways ("Deutsche Bahn").

From Munich to Garching or the research campus

From Munich Central Station ("Hauptbahnhof") take the underground line U4 or U5 (eastbound toward "Arabellapark" or "Neuperlach Süd", respectively). Exit at "Odeonsplatz" and change to the underground line U6 (northbound toward "Garching Forschungszentrum").

From the city center, take the underground line U6 from "Marienplatz" (northbound toward "Garching Forschungszentrum").

In both cases go to the final stop "Garching Forschungszentrum." Note that not all U6 trains go all the way out to the final stop. In the station, use the exit "Lichtenbergstrasse." You can see the IAS building right in front of you. (Walking distance about 200 m)

Travel time: approx. 30 min.

By taxi, the travel time is approx. 20 to 30 min and the fare is 45 to 55 EUR.

By car

The research campus lies close to the autobahn A9. Take exit 70 "Garching-Nord." Follow the signs "Forschungszentrum/TUM" (turn right if coming from the south, left if coming from the north/airport). Go straight at the traffic lights to cross the B11, and follow the Ludwig-Prandl Straße.  Pass the TUM weather tower and follow the left turn of the street until you reach a t-junction which is directly in front of the IAS building.
