Light-based technologies are established as part of the toolbox for clinicians in their daily routine. Latest developments are on the transition to clinical application. Starting from basic information on the interaction of light with tissue, current technical developments and their challenges are presented. Using clinical examples, the challenges for the translation and establishment of these technologies in clinical applications will also be discussed. This way biophotonic application in laboratory-medicine (e.g. iron deficiency, porphyria detection), light support in-vivo diagnostic (e.g. diffuse remission spectroscopy, fluorescence, ...) and laser treatments (photodynamic therapy, varicose vein, stone disease, ...) will be presented.
